OX BOX // South Georgia Island Case Study

South Georgia is part of a series of islands in the Southern Atlantic Ocean (near the South Pole). It’s home to many birds, seals, penguins, and other amazing creatures. The only people who live on South Georgia Island are scientists and government officials.

The South Georgia Heritage Trust is a nonprofit organization based in Scotland. Their main mission is to preserve South Georgia’s natural and historical heritage. Throughout the 19th & 20th centuries, sealers & whalers used the island as a home base. Although whalers departed the island when whaling operations ceased in the 1960s, they left behind a devastating legacy that to this day scientists are still trying to reverse.

When sealers and whalers docked their boats on the island, the Norway (brown) rat was introduced to this bird sanctuary. It was estimated at one point that hundreds of thousands or even millions of rats inhabited the island. Many of the birds who used the island to nest have fallen prey to the rats. Consequently, the bird population has declined at a dangerous rate.

The South Georgia Heritage Trust worked with scientists on a multi-million dollar project to blanket the entire island with rat bait. The Trust contacted Bell Laboratories in Wisconsin to help develop a plan for eradication of the invasive species.

One of the project’s many challenges included how to physically get the bait from Wisconsin to the South Pole; a journey of around 10,000 miles across land, sea, and rugged terrain in some of the most challenging weather conditions. Enter OX BOX, a heavy duty industrial packaging company based in the Chicago suburb of Addison, Illinois. The company was just in the midst of developing a weatherproof container that could also be compostable. Timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

OX BOX was contacted by a trade magazine who wanted to do a feature on the project. As part of their magazine feature, they also wanted to include a digital video component on their website that would compliment the article. We were hired to produce the video.
Tony Martin Scientist
We coordinated with folks at the South Georgia Heritage Trust to interview their lead scientist, Anthony (Tony) Martin. This interview was filmed for us in Scotland by an amazing local crew. The footage was shipped to our suburban Chicago studio; along with footage that was filmed while a documentary crew was following the team during their mission. We also coordinated local production at the OX BOX facility; where we filmed an interview with the company’s President and various b-roll of their operations.

We produced the piece, combined it with music, lower third motion graphics, and a final graphic animation of their company’s logo.

Delco Financial Group is a full service financial planning firm in the Chicago Southwest suburb of Shorewood, Illinois. They provide retirement planning, wealth management, and asset protection for clients.

When the marketing team at Delco Financial Group told us about their firm’s story, how it started, and their principal’s personal stories, we knew this was going to be an awesome visual story for this video production.

The company had always been with the family. David O’Dell’s father started the business. When David graduated from Wheaton College, he went into the financial planning business with his father. Five years into the business world, he felt a calling to go into the ministry. He pastored two churches for 14 years but eventually decided to go back into financial planning. The business started out in a one-room office that David shared with his wife.

Sports are an integral part of the O’Dell family. David and his son, Brian (also a principal of the business), frequently go road biking through the streets of Shorewood, Joliet, Crest Hill, Minooka, and Channahon. We wanted to film the two of them biking along the roads and tell a more personal story about their brand in this video.

We filmed everything in one day. In addition to video production, we also provided still photography services for their new website. The video was posted online and optimized for various online keyword searches.

This Chicago nonprofit wanted to create greater brand awareness and recognition by developing a video to be disseminated online as well as to each of its 50 state chapters nationwide. The primary purpose of the video is to portray Prevent Child Abuse America’s mission, brand, and nationwide reach, which tells the organization’s story in a visually compelling way.

Our crew filmed for three total days in the field. We interviewed key staff, board, and volunteers at the nonprofit’s Chicago headquarters. Using an anamorphic technique, we filmed the interviews against a plain white background and edited between three cameras. For the final vignette, we cast several actors who helped target various demographics.
