We have worked with Chicago-based nonprofit, Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago for several years on their Youth of the Year program.

Each year, several students are chosen as leaders at their specific club. Those students then go on to compete for the Youth of the Year title. As part of the competition, candidates write several essays. We knew this video was going to profile the candidates in some way. In thinking about the treatment for this particular video, we started reading through those essays and found some very powerful statements. We got to thinking…what if we combine those statements into a story? …and that’s exactly what happened.

Over the course of four days, we traveled to the organization’s clubs and filmed the candidates reciting their statements to the camera. All of their words were combined and presented to a live audience of over 900 people at Navy Pier.

Each year, individual clubs at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago (BGCC) nominate one exemplary member to compete for the title of BGCC’s Youth of the Year. The Award is considered the Nonprofit organization’s highest local honor; rewarding leadership, service, and academic standing. Eight candidates competed for this year’s title. Each of them shared amazing stories about how the organization has changed their lives. We filmed the event, which had over 1,000 people in attendance at Navy Pier in Chicago. After the event, we edited the highlight video online and delivered 100 DVDs to donors; some of which had custom thank you’s from each of the candidates.
